RUGBY LEAGUE

KEIRON STILL UP FOR CHALLENGE

SPECIAL DAY: Keiron Cunningham

Friday August 29,2008

By Martin Richards

YOU might think Keiron Cunningham would be a bit blase about appearing in an eighth Challenge Cup final. Not a bit of it.

“The hairs will still be standing up on the back of my neck when I walk out on Saturday. It is a special occasion for me because I am incredibly lucky to have the chance to lead out my home-town club at Wembley for a second successive year,” said Cunningham, the 31-year-old St Helens skipper who was ranked as the greatest player of the Super League era by an RL magazine in 2007.

“There will be no prouder St Helens boy than myself if I can lift that trophy again.”

Cunningham is set to agree another 12-month deal at Saints, but for now he is determined

to give departing coach Daniel Anderson a full set of domestic silverware before he goes home to Australia for good in October.

“At the start of the season we had a good look at ourselves and said that this bloke deserves to have the best possible send-off for what he has done for each and every player at this club,” said Cunningham.

“He is a special coach and a special man and I’d pinch the World Club Challenge trophy out of the Leeds cabinet for him if I could.”

But regardless of Hull’s lowly league position and Saints’ tag as favourites, Cunningham has been around the game long enough to know that big matches can throw up the unexpected.

“The cup is now their main focus. For the last month they have done nothing but prepare for this game,” he said. “They are massive up front and it will be a ding-dong battle.”
