It means the 28-year-old will be sidelined for both the clash with Andorra on September 6 and the meeting with Croatia four days late.

Reds boss Rafael Benitez confirmed the midfielder, who is having the operation today, will be ruled out of play for around 10-15 days.

The Spanish manager said: "I'm disappointed because Gerrard will have an operation on Thursday.

“He has a groin problem so he will have an operation and could be out for 10 to 15 days. "

The midfielder, who faces a routine operation on his niggling groin injury, struggled through the pain to help take Liverpool through to the Champions League group stage on Wednesday night.

He played the full 120 minutes of his team's victory against Standard Liege where  European lucky charm Dirk Kuyt scored the winner just two minutes from the end of extra-time.
