Robinho: Unique talent

Thursday August 28,2008

By Matt Law

PETER KENYON says the £28million signing of Robinho will move Chelsea closer to achieving world domination.

Chief executive Kenyon is confident his club will seal the Robinho deal after holding negotiations with Real Madrid.

Kenyon has set Chelsea the target of becoming the No1 club in the world by 2014 and thinks Robinho’s arrival will provide a unique milestone.

Blues have signed players from the world’s biggest clubs in the past, but they have all been considered to be entering the final years of their careers.

“Robinho will be the first young player we have signed from a club the size of Real Madrid,” Kenyon said at the release of Chelsea’s corporate social responsibility report yesterday.

“This is a different signing for us. He’s young, 24, so he’s the right age. He is coming from Madrid, so he understands what big-club football is all about.

“These things are always individual and this was always going to go to the wire with the nature of the player and with it being Madrid.

“But I’m confident we will get it done and Robinho is absolutely committed to wanting to come. He thinks he can be Chelsea’s worldwide name and I think he comes with real, real desire and wants to be recognised as one of the best players in the world.”

Manager Luiz Felipe Scolari, who made it clear he wanted Robinho when he took over, said: “Robinho is a good player because of his unpredictable style. If you expect something, he can change in a second. He’s different.”
