Paul Sculthorpe is to leave St Helens at the end of the season, with Super League new boys Salford his likely destination.

Saints have confirmed the 30-year-old will not be offered a new contract when his existing deal expires at the end of the season.

His injury record and salary cap constraints are believed to be behind the decision to part company with one of the most decorated players of the Super League era.

The two-time Man of Steel winner is expected to link up with Shaun McRae, the Australian coach who brought him to Knowsley Road as a teenager from Warrington in 1997, at National League One leaders Salford, who are thought to have offered him a two-year contract.

Sculthorpe was appointed club captain in 2004 and led the club to victory at two Challenge Cup finals but his last two years with the club have been blighted by injury.

He has played only a handful of games this year and was told by club officials in June he would not be offered a new contract but will continue as club captain until his exit.

A Salford spokesperson confirmed the club had been approached by Sculthorpe's agent but that no deal has yet been signed.

Sculthorpe, who has also been linked with his brother Danny's club Wakefield, is currently in his testimonial year.

He is back in contention for this week's trip to Harlequins after overcoming a hamstring injury and will hope to prove his fitness for this month's Challenge Cup final.
